I think the best things to do with priests who have their own agenda, who blatantly reject Church teachings, and who endanger the souls of their parishoners, is to excommunicate them. Truly, if they are in opposition to the Church, they have already put themselves outside of communion. It is best to just publicly and officially recognize this lest it cause confusion.

Runaway as in leaving? They let them go. There was a mass Exodus of priests in like the sixties. They let them leave.
Runaway as in not following the doctrines of the church like the very few that are child molesters? They should be excommunicated and thrown in prison.

If a man leaves the priesthood, he just finds something else to do. The Vatican does nothing.
Unlike Islam, to decide to leave the Christian faith for another religion is not considered a capitol offensive worthy of the death penalty. Your decision is between you and God.

I think the key phrase here is "runaway". I think they just may be beyond the Vatican's reach now.

Nothing, why would they. the vatican does not force priests to stay where they are uncomfortable, unlike Islamic leaders.

In the past, when a Catholic priest would molest little children and get caught, the church would simply send that pedophile priest to a different parish where they could do it again.
That is not what Jesus wanted.

They try to reconcile if possible to their vows and Christ.
If they refuse then the priest themselves ex-communicate themselves from the Catholic Faith.
