I am travelling to NY in 2 weeks. A friend is booking a hostel near Times Square. Which airport is best - not necessarily the closest but rather most effective at costing me the least to get to my hostel and then get back to the airport when I return?

Also- what is the best form of transportation that will get me to the hostel in a reasonable amount of time? I believe that the flights all arrive around 5 pm - rush hour?

Unless you're super strapped for cash....

http://www.nyairportservice.com/

12$ each way, to/from Laguardia or JFK

http://www.coachusa.com/newyorksightseeing/ss.newarkairport.asp

14$ to/from newark.

The bus will be slower than the trains, but should drop you off at or very near your hostel, and NO TRANSFERS!!! WoooT! easy!!!! easy!!! easy!!!!

Dont take a cab. Its a total waste.

LaGuardia is a really bad choice for airport. JFK and Newark is a better option. I would chose Newark, although it is in NJ, take a taxi and it gets you to the city within 30mins, and the Lincoln Tunnel are only steps away from Times Square. It'll be alittle more expensive, but I say it's worth it. If you take the train from the airport to Times Square, you'll be doing transfers and getting into the train might be difficult too. You'll have people pushing you and shoving you left and right. I don't want you to have the impression of rude New Yorkers. =)

Plan A fly into LaGuardia -LGA
Take the M60 bus into Manhattan- 116th St and Broadway
Columbia University $2.00
Take the Subway to Times Square/ 42nd St $2.00
or take the Q44 or Q 48 bus to Main Street Flushing $2.00
and take the # 7 Subway to Times Square- use the Express not the local $2.00
Plan B Fly into JFK
Take the Air Train to Jamaica Station $5.00
Take the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station $6.00
and either take any uptown Subway to 42 nd St or walk the 8 blocks -.4mi
or after you get off the Air train
You can take the " E" subway to the Port Authority 42nd and 8th Ave

JFK is the worst! Hardest to get to and MOST expensive cab ride for sure and longest trip.

Go to either Newark or LaGuardia. Newark has the NJ transit trains that go through it for very little money and take you right to Penn Station. Times Square is just one subway stop away from there... you won't even have to leave Penn Station, just hop on either the 1, 9, A, C, or E train uptown to Times Square.

I believe JFK has more accomodations to get you out of there in a timely fashion. If I remember correctly they can get you hooked up to the train system there which can pretty much get you where you need to go. As for pricing, try searching orbitz or something to see if they have the best prices. I think that they have more airlines than Laguardia

LaGuardia and Kennedy are your two options... both have taxi service into Manhattan, or you can take a train

asthetics wise, jfk is dark and dirty. newark is way nicer. jfk is a hassle to get to anyway, newark is easier. you can take the path into ny.
