Life after death is a faith based issue. It is an issue that has to come from the revealed word of God, or developed to define the faith-based beliefs of a religion. It cannot be proven, since someone has to come back to life and describe what life after death is.

“And how can man die better than facing fearful odds. For the ashes of his father, and the temples of his gods.” – Horatius keeps the bridge

Most people and religions believe in an after-life and in heaven. A significant amount of evidence is indicating that near death experiences are real. People actually experience them and they can also be stimulated, surgically. They all seem to have many of the same particulars: a tunnel, white light, music, a God who talks to them about their life, meeting of people who have died.

Sarah
In 1990, I lost a 9 year-old beautiful daughter named Sarah. Sarah had cerebral palsy. She could not talk, feed herself, or walk. However, she could smile the happiest smile, and laugh with such purity and depth, that it would warm your soul with joy.

Often, I would dream about my family and Sarah. When I dreamt, I would attempt to imagine what Sarah would have been like if she were not handicapped. I never could do it. Sarah was always in the wheel chair and always acted the same.

Yet, the same evening she passed away, when she consumed my mind as I slept, and in all my dreams since, Sarah is normal. I cannot dream her back into her wheel chair. In my dreams and thoughts, Sarah walks, she runs, she talks, and she plays. I cannot explain it.

An Opinion
I believe that your potential is unleashed and your spirit or consciousness becomes freed in some way after you die. You are whole and complete according to your created human potential. Thus, I believe I will live after I die. Why? I believe I will be held to account. Why else did I live? God exists; he created me for a reason.

I do not think anyone knows much more than that, for sure.

Moslem martyrs get 72 houris as sex slaves. Hindus, Buddhists and Jainists are reborn as many times as needed to achieve Nirvana. Any of this beats Christianity with one life and a choice of two unpleasant places for the afterlife. Some Christians say they'll forever sing hymns praising God-Yahweh. I'd be bored in a few seconds.

Here's one i came up with as kind of a joke... my own religion. The afterlife theory of my religion is that when you die you are reincarnated as a pet animal like a cat, dog, fish, etc. and are adopted by a family of people that belong to the group of people that you most hated in your previous life. For example... if you are a member of the KKK and you die, you come back as a cat and are adopted by an African American family. It's ultimate justice really... You are forced in your next life to rely on someone you hate to survive and are given the opportunity to see the better side of them and enjoy a loving relationship to counter the hate of your previous life.

If anyone wants to join my church please send $400 along with a self addressed stamped envelope to me... Just kidding of course.

I am an atheist. The only two possibilites that make sense to me are.
1. When you die you are dead. ( There is only one copy of you )
or
2. When you die, there may still be other exact copies of you surviving elsewhere in reality.

Which of these are true depends on the nature of identity, and how large the universe is.

from what I've seen, been shown, and understood, and personally Believe, the most accurate that has a specific "thing" would be the Kabbalistic views as to the afterlife.

this involves reincarnation, a single God and a place thats most equivalent to christian purgatory, that isn't actually negative, but its a place where you review all your sins of the past life, and try to learn from them, and repent.

The bible says nothing happens after we die. We wait for Jesus return. Those who are in a loving relationship with Him have promised rewards greater than any myths or stories I have heard.

My understanding of Buddhist thought is that we keep repeating lives until we learn what we need to learn and get one life right. Then it is Nirvana.
