The cat (or domestic cat, house cat) is a small carnivorous mammal and a subspecies of the wild cat. The cat is a skilled predator and intelligent animal, known to hunt over 1,000 species for food, and capable of being trained (and learning by itself) to obey simple commands and manipulate simple mechanisms (see cat intelligence). It has lived in close association with humans for 3,500 to 8,000 years, figuring prominently in the mythology and legends of several cultures.

Cats come in dozens of breeds and a variety of colors. Due to mutations, some are hairless and some are tailless. They use more than one hundred vocalizations and types of body language for communication, including calling ("meow" or "miaou"), purring, hissing, growling, chirping, clicking, and grunting. Like horses and other domesticated animals, cats can become feral, living effectively in the wild. Feral cats will often form small feral cat colonies. Animal welfare organizations note that few abandoned cats are able to survive long enough to become feral, most being killed by vehicles, or succumbing to starvation, predators, exposure, or disease.

Legends and myths about the cat exist in many cultures, from the ancient Egyptians and Chinese to the Vikings. They have been both revered and vilified by different cultures.

The trinomial name of the domestic cat is Felis silvestris catus; its closest pre-domesticated ancestor is believed to be the African wild cat, Felis silvestris lybica.

Cats typically weigh between 2.5 and 7 kg (5.5–16 pounds); however, some breeds, such as the Maine Coon can exceed 11.3 kg (25 pounds). Some have been known to reach up to 23 kg (50 pounds) due to overfeeding. Conversely, very small cats (less than 1.8 kg - 4.0 lbs) have been reported.

In captivity, indoor cats typically live 14 to 20 years, though the oldest-known cat lived to age 36. Domestic cats tend to live longer if they are not permitted to go outdoors (reducing the risk of injury from fights or accidents and exposure to diseases) and if they are spayed or neutered. Some such benefits are neutered male cats cannot develop testicular cancer, spayed female cats cannot develop ovarian cancer, and both have a reduced risk of mammary cancer. In contrast, feral cats living in modern urban environments often live only two years, or less. Feral cats in maintained colonies can live much longer; the British Cat Action Trust reported a 19-year-old feral female. The oldest feral cat was "Mark" who was maintained by the British charity Cats Protection and who reached 26 years of age.

Cats are athletic. Fast sprinters, they are capable of reaching speeds of about 50 km/h (about 30 mph) for short distances. They can often jump vertically up a fence or wall over 2 meters (over 7 feet) from stationary. The domestic cat is one of the few four-legged animals that do not possess rigid collarbones. This allows a cat to fit through an opening about the size of its head.

A newly discovered chapter in the Book of Genesis has provided the answer to the question, "Where do pets come from?"

Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me everyday. Now I don't see you anymore. I'm lonesome here and it's difficult for me to remember how much you love me."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail. And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem, because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you. His name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him 'Dog.'"

And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail. After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but perhaps too well."

And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Adam learned humility.

And God was pleased. And Adam was pleased. And the Dog was pleased.

And.... the Cat didn't care one way or the other.

All our domestic cats are descendants of a North African wild cat. When the Egyptians began to cultivate grain the wild cats came to the field to get the mice. When the grain was stored the mice would spoil it in the granaries with their urine and feces. So the cat became much revered for ridding the crops of these pests.

The great seaports of Cairo and Alexandria became home for the cat too and seamen found they were good to take on the ships as they kept the rat populations under control. So the cat eventually had a free ticket (in payment for its services) to the entire world.

I should be so well-traveled.

They come from Egypt. After the pyramids and the kohl painted eyes, almost nothing evokes more awe and mystery than the fascination ancient Egyptians had with cats.

They were not only the most popular pet in the house, but their status rose to that of the sacred animals and then on to the most esteemed deities like no other creature before them.

They originated in desert near Egypt. In ancient Egypt it was a crime punishable by death to kill a cat and you can see them every where even the most ancient hieroglyphics. The following link has a picture of the house cat's ancestor.

Cats have been domesticated for so long that we are not sure where they come from. Egypt has the oldest documented case of cats being kept as pets but it is thought that they were kept as such for thousands of years before this.

I don't know. I would guess any domesticated cat could be considered a house cat....but if there is a particular breed, I have no idea.

I believe Egyptians domesticated the cat. About 4000 years ago. They used them to get rid of rodents in their crops.
