First off, ignore the first two answers. They have no clue what they are talking about.
Secondly, a soldier must have morals and ethics, hard worker, patience (a big one). You have to be able to take a lot of bs, and understand that you are a soldier 24/7, which means you can be called into work at any minute of any day and you need to be ready.
You need to be in decent shape, able to comply to the regulations and manuals that govern each military branch, as well as be aware of the ones the govern the other branches.
You must have a sense of respect for your superiors, and you have to be able to give up a whole lot of your various freedoms (you can technically get in trouble for talking bad about the President, but no one actually gets on your case about it).

A Soldier must possess military bearing.
A Soldier must accept that his own feelings of fear give him the strength to make it through dangerous situations.
A Soldier must have great tolerance for those who insult him, for he has given them that freedom to have thier own opinion.
A Soldier must above all other things accept that he may lose his life for the country he loves.

You people are idiots. I can't believe anyone would insult the troops like that.
You think its neccesarily easy to join the military? No its not. Unlike popular belief you do need to be at least fairly smart. You must have a willingness toserve for your country. Must be in decent shape. In good health. Quick thinker. etc....
It really depends on what branch you join and what job you pick out.

Three major qualities:
- Sense of service before self
- Excellence in everything he / she does
- Integrity
These are the core values of the Airmen...I consider them universal...so they apply across Services and in Civilian Life.
Good luck and Hooah!
