Then what - Roman society were people would hang stone cocks outside their houses? The middle ages where you didn't have the right to face your accuser or a trial by jury? The era of slavery during the development of the Atlantic World? Maybe you mean the post-Civil War period where good white people in the south would get together to lynch black folk and have a party (over 100 almost every year up until the 1930's)? So the answer to your question is no - I don't think that todays society is more disrespectful. However, that doesn't mean it couldn't be better and there are some lessons we can't learn from the past.

I guess you would call me today's society I'm thirteen years old.. I truly think you should be asking if SOME of today's society are disrespectful because I find it an insult to be told that I am unruly and things of that nature. I treat my elders and higher authorities with the utmost respect.

Yes!!!! Just become a customer service rep. and your question will be answered!! The good manners of our forefathers were obviously lost somewhere down the line. In the "old days" even a criminal would rob someone in a polite way-"Pardon me madam-would you mind handing me your pocketbook?" Why people refuse to teach their children proper everyday etiquette is beyond me, but society has turned into a bunch of smart-mouthed, rude, uncaring, direspectful bunch of barbarians!! I think a copy of Emily Post should be given to every new parent along with the gift baskets of diapers and baby formula handed to them upon departure from the hospital! Why do people want to be viewed as crass, uneducated, ignorant morons anyway?

It has. It seems that people can't handle having others disagree with what they think. The example has come from mostly the pundits. Both sides are extremely rude to each other and their guests. When someone disagrees with them, instead of coming up with a counter point or just allowing the difference to be, they usually resort to name-calling. I've also seen this with politicians and unfortunately it's filtering down to just about every aspect of society.

I don't think it's so much disrespect, but plain old selfishness. That is what causes the rude behavior. Commercials and articles tell us all the time that we DESERVE good customer service. I work in retail- and believe me not everyone deserves good customer service. A portion of the "customers" deserve a good kick in the butt right on out the door.

No.

Is this what you mean?

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."

Socrates is credited by Plato as having said this in or about 400BC

We as humans are all guilty of really thinking things "now" are both much worse & much better than they used to be. Nonsense, of course.

Definitely! My friend and I were just talking about this yesterday. Sales people, people who are shopping, even little kids are so rude and disrespectful. I don't know what's going on.

Yes it seems to be a growing trend but lately there seems to be the beginnings of a respect revival.

Yes it has. All you have to do is work retail and have to deal with people to know the answer to this question. Customers think they are so much better than those who have to work retail.
