dog's a cocker spaniel, she is four years old, and I've been told by her vet and groomer that she has some severe plaque/tartar. I just got her a month ago, the old family abused her and obviously didn't care for her teeth.

If you feed her Canidae, dog kibble, it will take care of her teeth..
I have only been feeding Canidae for the past 21/2 years, and even my teenage dog's teeth are sparkling white..and my older dogs are sooooo healthy!

Or, Get a good quality rope toy...the ones that appear to be twisted string tied in a knot. Soak it in unsalted broth. Dry it in a very slow oven. she will try to chew all the falovor out of that, and it works as dental floss to keep her teeth clean, and her breath fresh.
If she grows tired, (couple of months)as the flavor is gone, just wash by hand, and re-soak.

Dog teeth should be brushed daily especially if they have plaque/tartar problems. Get a a good enzymatic toothpaste. I would also purchase things for her to chew on that are good for her teeth such as the 'floss' ropes. Or Tartar control biscuits. Try to cut out moist foods if that's something you feed her at least until her teeth are clean and healthy.

Once a week would be good, but you've got your work cut out for you if she's four and it's never been done. The tooth paste that is made for dogs is beef flavored. I'd put a little on the tongue and let her get used to the taste. Introduce the toothbrush slowly. If may take two people to get the job done.

I would say maybe at least once a week. They also have dog bones thay they can chew on that will help scrape off the tartar. You can find them just about anywhere. I think Greenies also help but there have been problems with small dogs choking on them you have to get the appropriate size for you dog.

I sincerely can relate. I brush my Labs teeth a few times a month. I found that I had better luck getting him to eat apples as they are a natural tooth cleanser. Perhaps it will work for you. If the dog refuses to let you brush it's teeth try bones, they too will hinder the growth of plaque.
