As parents we want the best for our kids. And we recognize the "bad" stuff" that children may not understand. So we protect them as best we know how. Yet we must also educate them so that they can recognize the bad and steer clear of it and make informed good choices. Better that they hear about it from the voice of love than catch it unawares from the fist of bad.

I dont think its possible to keep them from knowing ALL the bad things in this world. They are going to see and hear when they are outside of the home.
I would keep the lines of communication wide open , so that you can teach them right from wrong, and how to deal with the bad things in the world.
I was a bit sheltered and it really hurt when I found out that not all people were good. Its important to equip your child for the real world.

Hi Kerilynn. Yes, I think it's possible to protect our children and shield them from things they don't need to know about this world. That is actually our biggest and most important job as parents. To protect our children. And yes, there are a lot of bad things going on in the world. We can warn our children about these things in a way they can understand, without going into great detail of things they don't need to know, and that aren't necessary for their survival and protection. It's our job as their parents to use good judgement in preserving their original nature(innocence)by proper monitering of what they are doing, and who they are associated with. There will be some things they'll see that we won't see, as we can't be with them every second. However, if we know they are in the hands of caretakers and other family members who share our values and are equally protective, our children will be shielded from the bad things of the world. Peace.

Of course talk to them during dinner or something about morals and values. Take them out for activities and point out to them examples of good and bad (example: cleaning up after they play with their toys or when you see vandalism on the walls, tell them that is bad.)

Of course you cannot control what your child interacts with at school or other activities but spend time with them to make sure their thoughts do not go astray. Also, when you want them to do something, explain to them the whys and not just what not to do.

They will have their own world to discover so dont be all over your children - they will slowly be able to think for themselves. If you are all over them all the time, they will only learn to fear your rules and not do things so when they are out own their own, they will do the things that were once restricted.

Saying this is one thing, to perform it is hard. WIsh you good luck on your parenting.

No. And you shouldn't try. Protect them from bad things - yes, to a point. But one day they will be out in the World making their own decisions. To make the right ones they'll need to understand the bad things.

My parents tried that, and now I'm playing catch up trying to learn everything I don't know. It sucks. It's not a useful thing to do for your children. They need to know the basics and have an idea of what's out there.

Of course you can keep your children in the dark about the bad things in life. The only problem is they will be ill equiped to handle those things as adults.

No. But still, you don't want your kids to grow up without knowing the real world. You should let your kids learn about everything they want, but always let them know what they're allowed to know. The point is, If you don't tell them, Somebody else will in a way that it might not be the aproppiate one...

No there is no way to keep them from knowing about the "bad" things in this world but we can in stages prepare them to recognize and deal with these things.

Since kids go to school, they will learn some pretty bad things, you just have to set a good example for them. They look up to you whether they act like it or not.
