My friend has Windows NT installed on her computer and wants to install Windows XP. However, when I attempted to do this a warning box appeared stating that I would have to uprgade to Windows NT Service Pack 5 or higher. I then tried to uninstall Windows NT, but then received a warning box that said if I did that, the OS system would revert to Windows NT Service Pack 1. HELP!!!!!????? I don't want to uninstall something and mess things up. How can I simply install Windows XP on my friends computer?

First a warning. IT's quite likely that if a computer is running Windows NT, that it simply can't run Windows XP. First make sure that the computer's processor is at least 800MHz and that the machine has at least 256MB of RAM. ALso make sure that there is at least 4GB of free hard drive space. Failure to meet these requirements will at best result in a computer that is so slow that it is not realistically usable.

Install the service pack simply by clicking on it.

Back up as much data as you possibly can before upgrading to Windows XP, it doesn't always go well!

Good luck.

Actually, I wouldn't and here's why.

That computer is OLD. To run Windows XP, you would spend money on the software and hardware. You really need more than 512MB of RAM for that old rig. You would be better off just buying a really cheap machine, then upgrading that old dog. Save your money for a new machine. Staples had Compaq TOWER only computers for under $399 a couple of weeks ago. So why spend $200 on an OLD rig that is near it's death bed?

But if you DO decide to ignor my warning, BUY the RAM first, so you have 512MB or more. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com and check your system. Then BUY a bigger hard drive. You should have 40GB at least. It should be formatted for the NTFS file system. In fact, if you get another drive, you can simply replace the good Windows NT drive and NOT break it. Then just install Windows XP on the new drive.

In general, that Windows NT computer was purchases in late 1999 or early 2000. That makes that old DOG about 6 years old. That makes it 70 in Doggy years. You just might get 9 years from it, but why? It will be dog-gone slow.

See if you go to this site? http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Then regardless of what it says use "Custom" NOT Express to update her system. Send me a email address to troubled@howamazing.com and I'll to make sure you can even do it! Updating the system won't kill you so go ahead with that. Good Luck!

I think the answer is there. You need to upgrade first to SP5, then you can upgrade to XP.
