An electric motor is typically labled with a nameplate that has the brand name, voltage, amperage, service factor, frame size, and lots of other information on the plate. If you are unsure (and if the motor is of small size) you could take it to a local motor shop. There is a chart available that will allow a person to find out the frame size by taking a few measurements. This is called a NEMA chart or an IEC chart for metric motors.

A competent motor repair technician should be able to tell you a little about the motor. There is a possibility that the motor in question is what is called a OEC (original equipment manufacture) which means that it is specially built for a client that is going to reuse the motor on their own equipment. The motor may be a custom sized motor or could be a standard motor with a custom nameplate.

If the motor is large then it may be advisable to call a professional. There are specific measurements that can be made to determine the size of the motor. The application of the motor has a lot to do with sizing. Most motors need to be sized correctly. Check the NEMA chart. Also check the wiring and local codes for proper amperage sizing of the feed wire.

When in doubt, contact a qualified electrician. Good luck.

there should be a nomenclature someplace close to the electrical junction box..

the pertainant information is voltage, amperage, RPMs, and frame size, if it a larger motor, then it should have a wiring diagram of the tap connections for hooking up to different voltages..
