I made that mistake once and I had a melted mayhem in my microwave oven. Looked like marshmellow goo all over the interior of the microwave oven. It took me a whole week to get all that goo out of it. If it weren't for good old baking soda it would've taken a lot longer!
The only styrofoam that can go in microwave
is that that says Microwaveable on bottom!
You can easily put cardboard in the microwave. So you can easily cook in cardboard cereal boxes! Oh how I cook my oatmeal is I bowl the water in a kettle and then
put the hot water in bowl with the oatmeal and cover and let sit a minute or 2 and the hot water cooks the oatmeal!

I have used styrofoam in the microwave for quick heating. I've also cooked oatmeal and it will take to long. If you use styrofoam, it will melt.

NO!! styrofoam is highly toxic when microwaved, not to mention it melts. Gross!

Just make it on the stove.

Yes but if you overheat the oatmeal it will melt the styrofoam. I heated up mashed potatoes and chicken yesterday in styrofoam and it melted it some.

You can, but I would recommend your getting some glass bowls. There has been some discussion of late about Styrofoam and plastics, and saran emitting some noxious stuff that isn't good for you.

I don't cook a lot with my microwave oven. I use it primarily for reheating. If you stay below 175 degrees, you are safe with just about any Styrofoam, plastic container or Ziplock-type bag. Where people get into trouble is when we go to reheat pizza or what we had from the restaurant the night before, punch in 3 or 4 minutes and walk away. Yep, the styrofoam, plastic, or whatever, begins to melt and can release toxic chemicals into the food. For example, a slice of pizza takes only about 20 - 30 seconds to reheat, so don't push the minute button or express reheat button and walk away. Also if your microwave has a power button where you can adjust the intensity, it really helps in reheating. If you keep an eye on what you are reheating or trying to cook, you should have no problems. I do cook scrambled eggs in a styrofoam or paper bowl in the microwave, but not oatmeal. You need to use glass for foods requiring high temperatures. High temperatures, either caused directly by the microwave or the food itself, resulting in plastic being melted and changing its composition will most likely release toxic chemicals into your food.

You can, but most of the time the temp gets way to high and it starts to melt, not sure you want to eat styrofoam though. I always put my item of food on something else.

You can but it will melt some. Just check it periodically throughout the cooking time to make sure it hasn't melted through the bowl. Then transfer it to another styrofoam bowl after it is cooked.
