The reasons why your cat might lick you can vary...
Sometimes cats will lick you as they think they are helping to groom you, especially if they see you as a member of their family.
Licking can also be an obsessive compulsive symptom. But that is only in severe cases of licking. Such as ALL THE TIME. EVERYTHING. NON STOP. So I would disregard this option unless you think your cat has a problem.
Other times, it's because of the salt on your skin. Especially if you've just come home from a sweaty workout as sweating excretes more salt.

Licking serves several purposes with cats, but in my experience, when a cat licks a person, it's affection-seeking behavior. I have 3 cats, one of which comes up and licks me (sometimes on the elbow if I'm on the computer!) whenever she thinks I'm paying too much attention to other things and not enough to her. She's learned that I will usually stop and pet, play, cuddle, etc. with her when she let's me know she's "needy" this way. Cats show affection in many different ways, but oral behaviors (licking, biting) are triggered by instincts dealing with kittenhood (and dependency) and/or sexual behavior (they bite when mating). As long as the behavior is not repulsive to you, I'd go with it. If it is, you can gently modify their behavior into other avenues. There are lots of good cat training/behavior modification books out there. In the meantime, rest in the knowledge that your cat is being friendly and seeking your attention!

Mostly I think it's a grooming thing, cats that are close often groom each other, why shouldn't they groom the humans too? lol
Part of the time, I'm sure there is something on your skin that they can taste, and they either like it, or they are trying to rid you of it.
Also, they sometimes love to show you they care, love, and try to be affectionate by grooming your hands or rubbing up against your legs.
Eitherway, I love their sandpaper tounge hehe.

They are grooming you. In their eyes you are part of their family. Nothing to do with salt or kissing. They love you. Think of someone brushing their child's hair. It's comforting & relaxing to both.
