i tried with compound but didnt work--also looks as though someone let the wiper go and has slight scratches where wiper goes back and forth===any suggestions?????

Take to an "auto glass specialist" that repairs and replaces windshields. If the scratches are not too deep, they can be polished out with a buffer, (and the right "compound".) Depending on how much damage, how much experience, and how carefully they buff the glass out, you may, - or may not see slight distortions through the ploished ares, but probably not enough to really cause you any trouble in seeing what is going on ok! This is due to the fact that the thickness of glass will vary slightly in the buffed area, and may vary in certian spots within the total buffed area as well!

Some rock pits can be "repaired" as well by these people, (before it turns into a total "spiderweb" all over the windshield!

Sorry guy but if thy are that deep into the glass, you will have to replace it. The scratch is has eaten into the glass and any polish will not help.
