Why do so many people misunderstand the muslim relgion and culture????
The unitarian church I attend does many activities with a local muslim church like picnics and so so forth......I have worked with muslim doctors and have muslim friends....I am still surprised by all the negative responses they get due to many misconceptions regarding their religion and culture...
I believe that yes u cannot agree with everything another person says or does but u can still coincide and still be friends....Sometimes u need to agree to disagree because no one is qualified to judge the life of another...
I am a American and I can accept that there are many other cultures and religions......There is nothing wrong with that and no matter what people say there will always be muslim's, Christian's, Buddism, etc... and that is the truth..

no one has to justify themselves on their behalf because of the lack of intelligence and understanding...people are ultamitly afraid of what they do not understand...so it causes panic and agression ..

Yes definatley. Actually I would like to reply to whynotaskdon's post here. He is so selective in his quotations so as to make Islam seem evil or bad that it is disgusting for instance I will just take one example where he quoted a verse from the Quraan. The Verse of the sword from Surah Al Taubah (9:5), he very easily omitted to mention the verses preceeding this verse:
Surah Taubah (9:3)
'And a proclamation from God and His Messenger unto Mankind on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage. God is quit of the Polytheists, and His Messenger (too). So if you turn to God it is better for you and if you turn away then know that you can never tire God. And give thou good tidings to the unbeleivers of a painful chastisement.'
(9:4) goes on to say ' But those Polytheists with whom you have made a compact (covenant or pact), then they failed you not a little and helped not against you anyone, you fulfil with them their covenant till their term. No doubt God is pleased with the precautious ones.
(9:5) 'Then when the months of shelter are passed away, slay the Polytheists (referring to those who broke the pacts) wherever you find them and seize them and beseige them and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush and if they repent and do perform Salaat and do give Zakaat, so leave them their way. No doubt God is All-Forgiving,All Kind.
(9:6) ' And if any of the Polytheists seek protection from thee, grant him protection till he hears the Word of God, then do thou convey him to his place of security - that because they are a people who do not possess knowledge'
The above verses are just the verses around (9:5) and were revealed at a time when the muslims had signed pacts with neighbouring tribes. Some tribes broke the agreements that were signed. Therefore the verses above came into effect, muslims could take action against those tribes who broke the pacts but only once the Holy months had passed. The last verse shows that even if any of those who broke the agreements asked for protection they were to be protected and exposed to Islam (Word of God) and then released to where they would be secure due to the fact they could have been ignorant of Islam and what Islam was.
Sorry for the lengthy post but I do feel the post by whynotaskdon's and people like him are deliberate attempts to show Islam in a bad light

To be honest with you, the broad takes all the credit for that. So many biased news reports that are most of the time not true or even has a slight part of the truth. Even before 9/11
Many times I look at the news and I see that, what ever is on, is only half side of the story "the side they want others to see"
I'll give you an example, the wars that are happening in the world are all against Muslims, but what do you see on the news? You see people talking about how 'they' are trying to help the Muslim, and that they are being killed for that. But if you look at the other side of the story Muslims are being killed, there lands are being taken away form them, and so is there welth.
That's what I know, hope it answered your question.

Well now I am really confused. I thought some Muslims are misundertood and believe the terrorist activity in the name of Allah is wrong. Now with Whynotask's quotations, its no wonder Muslims are misunderstood if those quotes are part of their Bible. Those quotes give Religious Leaders permission to maim and kill innocent people. People have a right to believe anything they want to believe in and should not run the risk of losing their life because of their beliefs. You said you accept many cultures and religions...does that mean you accept terrorism as well because those quotes were pretty powerful and pretty obvious why these terrorists believe they are doing the right thing in the name of God...God is telling them to do these things.

YES! The media does a great job at misguiding people and making them think that all Muslims are terrible people. They are not, it's the extremists that are bad. I didn't have an opinion about Islam until I met and fell in love with my future husband. Now I know how wonderful Islam really is, and I am very proud of who my fiancee is and what he believes in. People are so hateful and ignorant here that I have chosen to move to my fiance's country to live so he can practice his religion freely and without prejudice.

I think moderate Muslims, those who actually follow Mohammad, are misunderstood because of a few who do not follow Mohammad's teaching. I also think they can remedy this themselves by standing up and taking back their faith from the radicals who have stolen public opinion. Christianity has known the same extremist influence and we have taken it as our duty to defend the Word of God from misinterpretation. Islam is a peaceful religion but does allow for defense against an attacker. How is it that they do not see the radical as an attacker. If it were my religion, I would defend it from radicals. I would not expect the rest of the world, not even of my faith, to do it for me. It's not a misunderstanding that the majority will not take charge of their own faith, but prefer to let the rest of the world do it for them.

It's not the religion that been misunderstood. It is the people who have narrow mind. All religion preach Love. It is like going to one place by taking different routes.
Muslim is a good faith. But there are some who misuse the faith to their own advantage. I belong to Hindu faith and I have Jews, Christian Muslim Buddis friends. We are open minded and take it easy type people. I hope more exists like our friendship.

maybe muslims need to come out and talk about their faith and not let the fundamentalist (only a few I know, but to most other people that is all they hear about the muslim faith) aware with hijacking their culture (notice Pope Benedict did not refer to them as a Religion. That is fair enough, as Catholics we believe we are the one true faith. No doubt other religions feel the same!

People misunderstand the muslim religon because:
They are participants in all of the ongoing shooting wars in the world.
If you say they are not peaceful they will kill you.
They torture and murder people who are not of their religion.
They shoot school children in the back as they run away.
They blow themselves up in markets and cafes.
They saw heads off on video.
There are no positve contibutions from this religion for the last 800 years.
Women are second class citizens.
They fly airplanes into buildings
They bomb subways and trains
Islam is a Religon of Death
We see no Muslims condemning theses acts so they must all agree.

Muslims are the current group to pick on to make others feel superior and the butt of jokes and recriminations.
Give it a year or two and it'll be some other group.
