The bigger problem here is your mom's mental illness, not the mess. Is she receiving treatment? Is she on medication? If she is, she may need to be re-evaluated for a different med or possibly see a different doc if this one isn't working. If she is not undergoing treatment, she needs to get it. Problem is, she is an adult and you can't force her to do anything she doesn't want to, including clean up the house. Maybe you can offer her an incentive like if she has a garage sale and sells some stuff, you two can take the money and go away for a couple days, or buy new furniture, or re- decorate, or something. Give her a reason to WANT to get rid of her stuff. Some people as kids grew up without, and as adults they hoard everything (especially those raised during the Great Depression) . You may need to accept that this behavior may not change. My mother saves EVERYTHING. I know how you feel. Wish you the best.

I can't begin to express how much I relate to this exact same issue. My mom has s h i t everywhere too for the exception of the bathroom.
I don't get it. I guess at the same time, my mom hasn't had a man since my dad and her broke up back when I was a baby. I think she fullfills the void in her life by buying stuff that she doesn't need let alone will ever use.
She goes to these retail stores and shops on the sales racks, buying stuff thats anywhere from $2-30. She brings the stuff home and never thinks of it anymore. Since I'm 24 years old now, you can imagin how much crap has accuminlated over the years.
Anytime I bring up or sugges that she does something about this mess, she gets an attitude and changes the subject. It really depressing me, and I think this is very selfish of her, because when she dies I will be the one responsible for cleaning up this mess.

How long has this been going on? If this is a life long practice, then perhaps your mom is a bit of a pack rat. If your mom is an elderly person it may just be a matter of you sitting down with her to help sort out the important stuff and doing some helpful cleaning with her.... If that is beyond your scope, then contact a professional cleaning service.

Get her some professional help. With a good therapist she can sort/thin out her own things. Taking an obsessive/compulsive's property without their consent is very disturbing to them.
You could talk to her about getting a storage place so she could be more comfortable in her home.

Call ;one of those places that helps you clean the house from top to bottom . I think here they are called house busters. They should be able to help you and get your mom some help too or else this will happen again because she is obsessive compulsive she needs help to stop shopping.
