You have to think up a business plan.
First are your paintings good, I mean really good so people will want to buy them, are they done in professional manner and on professional material.
Second get a web site. It is a nice tool to adverise and show off your work to future customers, and a place people can go to at their own leasure and look at your work. I have a free web site where my domain name cost $10 a year check it out http://www.piotrwolodkowicz.com you can link from there and open your own, no major skill needed to set it up.
Get business cards and start adverising, Try showing in local libreries, restaurants, cafes, stores, anywhere you can get your work in, banks financial institutions, realestate offices, insurance offices.
Join as many groups of artists and guilds as you can, look for them on the net.
Get into juried shows,
One important thing you can get is a book called artist's and graphic designers market it comes out every year and lists galleries that accepts work from new artists, how to approach the galleries, and lot of advice on galleries and how to deal with them, this book is a must read for all artists.
I hope it helps
good luck

Start going to Arts and Crafts fairs where you can set up a booth. Go to as many as you can even if you don't sell anything for a while. GET YOUR NAME OUT THERE. Go to some local businesses and see if you can display a few in their business. with your name on a card beside it. A price if they will let you. Donate some. If there is a Charity auction, donate a painting with the stipulation that your name is used when it is auctioned. Create a good business card stating your name, phone # and the type of art you do. If you have a studio put that address on it also your email and a website if you have one. Paint in public. At the park down town etc. . . .

an artist in our area displays her paintings at a local resturaunt. The place gets to use her work to decorate with and she gets to sisplay this and sell them without having to shell out the cost of booth or storage.
The above Flea Market idea is a good one also
