It's a killer combo - for under $2000, simply the best there is.
The 30D is an excellent camera and the 17-85mm provides great image quality with the perfect range for a walk-around lens.

The EOS 30D is a very good camera.
However, users of the EF-S 17-85mm Lens only give it a fairly average rating.
There are obviously better lenses available...it all depends on how much cash you want to fork out...but I can understand that you want to make the right choice, so do a little research.
Good luck.
