I just want to see how old systems were like and still have Windows XP running in the background.

There is no "emulator" you either use the OS or not. But, you can use Virtual PC - it's free - or VMWare - also free - http://www.microsoft.com/virtualpc and http://www.vmware.com/

Again - use virtual PC or VMWare. You can then install the old OS and see what they were like without ever leaving Windows XP.

I don't know why you'd want an emulator, but if you are trying to access a program that runs in an older version of Windows, follow my instructions:

To access Windows XP Compatibility mode, right click the application and choose "Properties". If you actually clicked an ".exe" file, you will see the "Compatibility" tab on the top. Click it and choose the operating system. You are good to go.

Hey, go figure... WinXP has compatibility support for older windows. Right click on the shortcut for the application you are trying to run and click on the Compatibility tab. Check the box labeled "Run this program in compatibility mode for.." and select the operating system. This usually works. Unless there is some other reason you want a Windows Emulator?

an emulator is generally not illegal, unless you have to add code that is copywrited ( as the romchip on playstation emulators)

what is illegal on most emulators is the copied rom files ( the games themselves)
(were talking about videogame emulators here)
