I did this years ago with a cat I had at that time. I took some elastic (the kind you buy at a sewing notions place). I tacked one end at the upper part of a large open doorway that led into another room. At the other free end, I tied a catnip filled toy onto it. I hung it just high enough that the cat would have to stand on his hind legs and reach for the toy. He would get it in his mouth and try to take off with it. When the elastic stretched to its limit, the toy would be snatched out of the cat's mouth and then spring around for a while which made it even more amusing to the cat. He would play with that thing a lot and, of course, it kept us very entertained as well. I would laugh so much at times I would be close to tears.
Get a scratching post. That usually does the trick so they won't be scratching furniture.

You are the best thing for your cat to play with! Interactive play is a great way to keep your cat healthy and happy. This won't necessarily help your furniture problem, however. I personally solved this in a couple of ways. First, I had my worst scratcher, who is strictly an indoor cat, declawed. I also bought some cat furniture - you know the poles with multi-levels, several textures (rope, carpet, etc.). Additionally, I used some cat repellent (ask at your pet store which ones they have heard are effective without damaging furniture - they're very helpful) on my leather furniture. I just did the backs and sides as I do want them to cuddle with me, and it's usually backs, sides, corners that get scratched. I have had very good results! Good luck!

My cat doesn't react well to catnip so we have to find toys without catnip. Our cat loves the small fabric toy mice. If he gets bored he'll play with them himself, but if you pick it up and get his attention and then throw it he runs after it. Also, he loves the paper covered straws you get at restaurants. You just have to move it around in front of him and he goes nutty. This may be however that his previous owner and myself are both waitresses. Scratching posts or boards are also a good idea.

There are so many cat toys and lots of them don't cost anything, like paper scrunched up so it makes noise when the cat bats at it. String that the cat will chase after. Balls that they can hit and run after or bat around. Sometimes catnip doesn't effect my cats so I think some is good and some is too old to work anymore. Most of it doesn't seem to work. Cats seem to like to play most when you are involved so they don't lose interest.

You could have a toy with a little cat nip, because they really love it. You can also smudge a bit of cream cheese on a stuffed toy, and let them try to chew it up (obviously don't let them eat it). You could also put brightly colored feathers (especially green, red, and yellow) on the end of a piece of yarn, then hang it from a door handle and put butter on the feathers. A rather old trick, this is rather messy, but you could put butter on your cats paws (yes all four) then let it lick the butter off. It consumes time, and I think that it would be a rather good treat. Good luck!

a scrunched up paper ball works miracles! If your cat starts scratching something he shouldn't, scrunch up some paper (and make a lot of noise doing it) and then throw it in front of him! My cat would play for ages with a paper ball (or a big heavy elastic...something too big for them to "eat"). Good luck!

...okay, I'll give you step by step on how to find the best toy for your cats satisfaction....
1) find a hard surface. (counter top, hard wooden or concrete floors ext.) if you do not have access to any of these...uh oh...
2) lower your head to about half a foot away from the surface.
3) raise up and slam your head as hard as you can onto the hard surface.
4) if you hear a crack somewhere at the upper most part of your skull and something plops out onto the floor, that would be your brain. (if it doesn't crack successfully, repeat step number 3 over and over.)
5) grab brain and roll it to your feline. if he goes not find it amusing to mess with you mind, give him a paper ball instead and go to the nearest hospital. your furry feline will find it just as entertaining as your furniture.
HOPE THAT HELPED!!! :P lol

Having had 4 cats in my life (not all at once!), I found the best and cheapest cat toy is a paper Dixie cup. It rolls, they chase and when they've chewed and clawed it to pieces, you just give them a new one.

Some toys that my kitten loves are scrunched up tin-foil to swat around, milk jug caps, and string or ribbon.
