It cant. because every contraction the heart undergoes is calculated as pumping the 'impure' blood out and taking in the 'pure blood'. As you know the metabolic activity in our body is a continuous process by which the blood supplies oxygen to the remotest cells in our body. We can have a break between two meals but the heart cant as the heart is like an 'auto pilot' in an air craft by which a pilot just takes a break leaving it on 'auto' piloting. heartfully yours.

Well.. it DOES. Bettween every contraction, there is a space of time where the heart is relaxed while its cells regain the electric capability of contracting again. Its a period of rest.... albeit a small one.

the heart does rest there is a contraction cycle and a blood filling cycle the contracting cycle is systole and the blood filling cycle is diastole these are the 2 numbers on a blood pressure reading
