I'm a buddhist and the content of your question is news to me!
I don't remember a time when I thought that 'We' as humans were the highest life form, if anything far from it.
I believe that all beings are equal, i wouldn't treat a cat or a goat any different from a person.
To a buddhist all life is sacred, not just those which we sit down and choose.
If you're specifically on about the system of reincarnation which Buddhists believe in, then the only reason why the human would be at the top (logically), is because Siddhartha Gautama himself was human, and then became a Buddha when he gained spiritual enlightenment. So one would automatically think this as it is logically the obvious.

Tell the US that. They're using dolphins to diffuse underwater mines. It's all in the training. Live and let die, kill or be killed. Nature goes way beyond the comprehension of any human, in terms of understanding it. If Buddhism knew the nature it looks down it's nose at, if it had higher knowledge, it would get up off it's hole and start solving some of the serious environmental issues we have before us. That goes for every so called contact to a higher power. Science should be taught like a religion. It's fairly obvious that the consequence of ignoring nature will have a more tangible effect on human life, more than some dream of superiority, more than some lala land of judgement beyond the grave. Meditation is escapism to an inner peace by avoiding issues. Nature is not at peace. It is opposites colliding and reacting at their peak. Building a world of cement and fairytales is not the answer. Am I rambling? Maybe, but my point is, Nature is far superior. It holds the secrets that create and allow for our maintainence. And by **** does it have the power to send us back to the sea, where we truly began.

Everybody is answering and saying that other animals go to war also. I don't think their motivation is the same as human's. for the other animals, it's about survival, for humans, it's usually about greed, oil, etc...
So, to answer your question regarding war...
We abuse our sensibilities. Politicians can bend truths to wage war. Propaganda is used through mainstream media. The other animals don't pull that crap.
Being human and having advanced frontal lobes is a big responsibility. I think the typical American (including politicians) have over active frontal lobes which tell them that they are more important because they're "smarter". Yes we are smarter, but not better or more important than any worm.

Animals don't go to war?????? Ever watch ants? Elephants? Sharks? Even dogs defend their territory. Before you make such a stupid comment, try learning about the world around you. Without war there is no freedom, freedom has a price to keep it.

well, my mam practises buddhist meditation, but i think a nice nap and a plate of chicken does just aswell.
to answer your question, buddhists are human beings, and humans tend to be a bit up themselves. they should realise by now that cats are the supreme species. after arl , like you say, we don't go to war and didnt need to be taught meditation, we do it naturally.
