It depends on the level of your addiction. For those who have been drinking alcohol everyday for years it may not be safe to just abruptly stop drinking alcohol. There is a definite risk of serious illness and even death and hospitalization for detoxification is recommended. You can google "delirium tremens" for more information about this. If you feel you need to stop drinking but cannot succeed on your own there is help for those determined to help themselves. You can discuss your situation with your doctor. Try attending an Alcohol Anonymous meeting. It certainly cannot harm you in anyway. Go to the meeting late, sit in the back, and leave early if you want. Nobody is going to try to "indoctrinate" you but you will be offered support. Nobody can determine if you have an problem with alcohol but you. If you think you need to stop drinking and can do it on your own that would be great. If you need help seek it. I would be more than willing to assist you in anyway I could. HAIR OF THE DOG!
Seriously without medical supervision, alcohol withdrawl can kill. Unless you are in a safe, professional environment, a little alcohol is safer than none at all. Get Help. I know someone who only could quit drinking by starting a heroin addiction. She is now treating that but at least she only hurts herself instead of driving drunk and killing some innocent family. Dont do drugs, get help.

Doctors have meds now which can help. Meetings will help too if you don't mind getting smoked out or being around lotsa people.
