just look at food presentation during the middle ages (things like sotelties) and even the modern beauty of the way eastern food is put forward. Then there's theme cakes, chocolate and ice carving, heck one afternoon watching the food network should give you tons of ideas (smile)
cooking is alchemy
baking is chemistry
food is art.

Food is like art because you take whatever medium you are using, charcoal or chicken, poetry or pasta... and you are trying to create something. Cooking with a cookbook is like copying a poem. Taking raw ingredients and expressing yourelf is art. And just like other forms of art, food items are an acquired taste. Some people don't like fish, but I love making mussels in beurre blanc. Some people hate pasta (?!?!?), but I love taking tomatoes and basil or garlic, butter and olive oil and creating a unique dish based on my tastes. I can add anything I want to create something uniquely me... Of course I am my own worst critic... Even if other people rave about a dish, if it isn't what I was trying to "say," I'm not happy with it.

To me, art is anything that allows you to express your thoughts and ideas. Art comes from inspiration, and inspiration is everywhere.
Food is an art because people express themselves through their food. Food is so emotionally driven, as is art. Think about it - when you're having a bad day, you make your favorite comfort food. If you were a traditional artist you would paint a gloomy painting to express your feelings.
I think food is the best form of art - beautiful, expressive, and DELICIOUS!
Good luck with your speech hun :)

lets say I get a potato
and boil it till its mushy,
and serve it to you cold.
is it gonna taste good? are you gonna enjoy it?
now lets say I take that same potato and slice it and make scalloped potatoes with it?
are you gonna enjoy it more?
there is an art.
its got to 1 taste good,
and then its gotta look good to.
if it looks like dog food, many people will pass it up without trying it
and there is an idea of food too that a great dish must have 4 things to be complete
sweet, sour, salty, bitter.
even think of something basic like a hamburger,
would you be more attracted to it if it had
the buns together, with the meat and toppings on top?
or assembled in the usual way?

Can't wait to hear yer speech!
I think food is a multidimensional art. How it looks is only a small part of its true beauty. While a beautifully presented plate is lovely to look @, that's what is SUPPOSED to stimulate your appetite... so it better have a fabulous taste to back it up. Otherwise we'd all be world-renowned chefs.
