Ideallly, take it to the vet first, to get the teeth checked and cleaned if need be. It can be pricey, feel free to call around and find a good price.
Once the teeth are clean, yes, brush them as often as you can. Every day is best (yeah, I know--who has time??) but whenever you can will help. Get a dog toothbrush and special toothpaste from a pet store (do NOT use human toothpaste). Just start slowly by letting the dog taste the toothpaste and chew on the brush a little. Then try to brush a couple teeth. Just work your way up to brushing whatever the dog will let you do. Always give lots of praise and a yummy treat afterwards so the dog will know that this is not a bad thing. I assume that your dog is not so antisocial that he will bite you, but you know your dog best. I can do anything to my pups but I know that all dogs are different.
Anyway, there are all sorts of 'dental' treats, like Greenies and other biscuits, and rawhides. Even plain old rawhide does help a little, and there are some now that have an antibacterial agent added to the rawhide that is supposed to help keep the teeth/gums clean, not sure how well it really works. As another person mentioned, there is a 'mouthwash' that you add to the drinking water that is supposed to help as well. We used to add chlorophyll tablets to our dog's water, it seemed to help a little.
If the breath is really putrid, though, please get the teeth cleaned at the vet's at least once. Some poor dogs and cats have really awful teeth and they are very painful.
Good luck!

there are several reasons that can cause bad breath in dogs... a trip to the vet may give you a more definitive answer. Tooth decay, worms, internal parasites all can equate into foul smelling breath. It is important that the dogs teeth are checked... gum infections (human gingivitis) can go systemic and effect the over all health of your pet.

Ttry the dog treats that help, there are doggy mints call Yip - Yap I believe, and they work, you could go to the vet, brush your sdog's teeth yourself (and risk getting bitten) or you could buy the doggy mouthwash, which is new. You put a certain ammount of it in your dog's water, and it IS edible, so there is no gargling or spitting out involved.

Brushing teeth and tongue. I have seen mint flavored doggie biscuits on the shelf at the grocery store. You might try them. If you are feeding canned food, I would switch to dry. Are his teeth bad? Sometimes the vet needs to remove the tartar from the teeth.

Do you brush your dogs teeth. Just like humans they need them brushed also. They sell toothpaste for dogs and brushes. Also there is dog mints that you may want to try.

Been battling that one myself. They have pills for this but usually doesn't work much. You might have the vet check his teeth. He may have a cavity or two. Get the teeth cleaned as well.
