It depends on how self confident the mother is. I can see where some women would take offense and then again I don't see the reason why they should. Maybe when noticing his attributes that are likes his fathers maybe add in a couple ones that are like his mothers. You know us women....moody, and like to take personal offense to comments. You can never know what a women will say to that....I know because I am one.

It's not unless you follow up: "Oh your son is so cute, he looks just like his Daddy" with "Thank goodness!"

That said, I'm sure the mother would like to think some of her qualities have come across into her child so if saying that try flattering the mother by saying you're sure all the intellect and personality wil come from her, but say it nicely or she may think you're inferring that she has passed on the qualities and intellect of an intellectually challenged Anti-Christ!

No. You're merely stating a genetic fact. Most children tend to more strongly favor one parent than another in appearance. For instance, I personally resemble my father more than my mother. However, my mother would likely have been happy to have been told that she had a cute baby, anyhow.

No I don't think it's rude. People have come up to me and told me that my son has my coloring but looks like his father which makes him even more cute.

I don't think so. They're two separate statements: he's cute. He looks like his daddy.

That is perfectly fine to say. If you had something like, "Oh thank God you don't look like your mother", then there's a problem.

Um, no.
The person is remarking at how cute the little boy is and how much he looks like his dad.
There is no insult to the mother in there anywhere.

anytime you say to a mom that her child is cute, you'll see the smile of a proud parent. it doesn't matter who the little bumpkin looks like.
