Most of Central and South America was discovered and conquered by Spain and Portugal. Since Spain and Portugal are hardcore Catholics the new world was made Catholic.

Northamerica was populated by a bunch of pilgrams that were runing away from England. They were protestants therefore North America has a high protestant population.

--Is Catholic--

The original colonization of the Americas was done precisely to form colonies. Each colony was directly governed by the homeland which sent people there to populate the colonies. Thus, you should not be surprised that Catholic Spain established Catholic Mexico and Protestant England established the Protestant British Colonies.

I would also like to point out that France, Catholic, established Catholic colonies in the Canadian Territories and Louisianan Territories, so it is not like N. America was wholly Protestant. In the American Colonies there were also important Catholic settlements from European countries. Maryland (really is Mary Land) is a prime example of this.

In Mexico, the Catholic faith became associated with the lower classes and the poor. In fact, Catholicism was greatly suppressed in Mexico until the 1930's (or around there).

In the US there was a large influx of German, Irish, and Italian Catholics during the late 1800's and early 1900 due to famous and social upheaval in Europe. The south is much more heavily Protestant than the Midwest which tends to be more Catholic.

But in general, people like to be around people like themselves so that is why there are areas that are more Catholic than Protestant and vice versa.
