I need a good powered subwoofer, preferably Velodyne, in a approx 640 sq.foot room(only half of this room is for the home theater, if it makes a difference) My budget range is about $800.
My setup is a JBL Studio L, 7.1. What would be a good model, and what size in general would be good for this space, mainly for movie-watching?

Velodyne are very good but you can get a Sony or a Klipsch sub and get a better value.

Mini-school on subwoofers:
Human hearing goes down to about 23-28Hz. Most music won't go below this, because the intent is for you to hear it. This lower end of the harmonic scale is where bass falls into. However, movies will frequently record things into the 18Hz range, as they also want you to "feel" the movie.
The more air you can push, the more you can make someone feel bass. Movie theaters use montrous 18" or better subs to help achieve this in a large space over a large audience. You can't afford these, and your space isn't as big.
Some 12in subs can achieve this miraculous 18Hz range. Most Velodyne you could afford can't hit it. Besides the models you mention here, check out the link below to a very affordable model. I have the Energy s12, and it rocks my entire house. It has the energy and mass to move enough air, as well as technology that allows it to reproduce without distortion down to the 19Hz level.
I bought it new, on ebay, for $425. I listened to it against Velodyne and HSU, it kicked the Velodyne's butt and cost $400 less. It was very comparable to the HSU (couldn't tell the difference, and the Energy was less expensive).

Try looking at some models put out by HSU research, specifically the VTF range. These subs are purchased factory direct (with reasonable shipping) and will compete with anything that you can buy in the big box stores for twice the price. The sound is best described as deep and tight, and LOUD if you want it :-)
the VTF (of variable tuning feature) allows you to choose deep bass without the loudness, or a slightly higher cutoff in the bass with louder output. It is like having one sub for music and movies.
FWIW, the HSU VTF-3 will wipe the floor with a similarly priced velodyne model.

An excellent 12" powered sub can easily be had for $800 or less. Velodyne is good in their upper models, but there are better choices out there in my experience -especially for $800. Let me give you my short list...
Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk 2
$699.00
(extremely capable for music or home theater in extension and high SPL)
SVS SB12-Plus
$699.00 and up depending upon finish choice
(very good overall performer)
Definitive Technology SuperCube III
$699.00
(extreme low frequency performance)
NHT Classic 12
$549.00 to $949.00
(very musical will excellent low frequency extension, nice finish)
And if you're a DIY'er, either one would be a fun, quick, and easy project that will sound much more expensive than it is...
Dayton Audio TITSK-12K 12" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER KIT
$536.70
(High-powered, high SPL, very good extension, excellent for music and home theater)
-or-
Dayton Audio TITSK-15K 15" TITANIC MKIII SUBWOOFER KIT
$664.11
(This one may be an overkill for your room -unless you like to have the extra performance available if ever you want to use it. It will challenge the best home subs at any price.)

That is indeed a big room. It sounds like to me that you should try to find a 15 inch subwoofer. Xenon's suggestion about the Dayton subwoofer sounds very appropriate.

On the lower end, Cirwin Vega makes a decent powered unit in 10 or 12 inch. That would fit well into your budget, to go up from there, I use a 12 inch Klipsch (powered). I feel to go up from there you would just be buying a name if thats important to you.
