Malcolm X was feared, becuase he was the leader of what appeared to be redical blacks. Whu=ites feared anyone who would challenge exisitng status quo things, like blacks in higher positions, the opportuinity to vote, etc...big city whites had more acceptance, while in the south, they had long terrorized the blacks through thre KKK and other illegal organizations which conducted lynchings.
In reality, Martin Luther King, who preached non violence, was not feared but looked upon with reverence. Malcolm X prhed things other than passive resistance, which made people fear he and his white shirt bow tie followers. X also believed that whites were not to be trusted or particularly dealt with. THis attitude chnaged after he went to Mecca, and that cost him his life.

White people, like any large category of people, don't all think alike.
But overall, a lot of people probably thought Malcolm was kind of scary and violent.
(By the way, the "X" in his name had nothing to do with prison or the number ten; it represented a rejection of slave names, since American slaves were assigned their family names by white perpetrators of slavery.)

Most probably feared him. As most people fear the unknown/radical change type person.
