It's called cytoplasm. It's actually pretty thick. It's water with lots of ions, huge proteins, RNA, sugar, etc. Lots of RNA translation (making proteins) happens there. It's also where sugars start getting broken down. Basically, all the processes that aren't happening in organelles are happening in the cytoplasm!
