guantanamera....think it means "girl from Guantanamo", but not sure.

Everyone is right, the song is called "Guantanamera" with the original lyrics by Jose Fernandez Diaz and the more popular "official" lyrics adapted from a poem by Jose Marti.
Because guajira can also refer to a style of Cuban folk song/rhythym itself, most people get confused between the two But the song is about an individual.
The original lyrics refer to -a guajira- which is Cuban spanish for a peasant girl. So the the original lyrics refer to a peasant girl from Guantanamera (guajira Guantanamera).
And because the word can mean a either a style of rhythym (which most people think the chorus means) or a peasant girl (originally what the chorus meant), that is why the chorus' lyrics are still used today even with Marti's apparently unrelated lyrics.

Guantanamera means either 'a female from Guantánamo' or 'from Guantanamo' (adjective). Guantánamo is a town in Cuba.
BTW: The song is NOT about a girl (probably got confused with the 'Girl From Ipanema').
In this song, "Guantanamera" is used as an adjective for "guajira". "Guajira" is a popular cuban type of song that deals with peasant themes. In other words, "Guajira Guantanamera" means 'a guajira from the town of Guantanamo'.

I was intrigued by the Wikipedia explanation.
But recently I heard on some radio programme that it was a song about a girl from Guantanamo: before Cuba got isolated following the confrontation between US and SU, Guantanamo City was just outside the US base and a famous red light district. The song is - according to that programme - about a prostitute in Guantanamo.
