If he has an attachment to you, he's going to feel hurt no matter what you say. You might simply say you've enjoyed your time with him, but you'd rather have a friendship with him than a relationship. Tell him you just don't feel ready for anything that deep right now and you're sorry for any pain you might have caused him. Sound sincere and hopefully he will be all right with it. Breaking up is hard to do...there's a song about it.

First make sure you do this in a public place, like a cafe or a nice restaurant, because your not going to know how he will react. Simply start off with: I no longer feel that we should see each other, things aren't simply working out between us anymore. Say it with a clam soft tone. Never break up with some one with a loud aggressive voice that can be dangerous.

Be nice about it. Sit him down and explain how you feel and say you'd rather just be friends. Gentally tell him what went wrong and how things will be better off if you guys aren't together. Avoid drama as much as possible.

Some one always gets hurt and there is no real way to avoid that. Just be honest and to the point-don't draw it out and don't tell him that you want to be friends.
