What some consider "unknown" is just less obvious. For example, if a blind person is told that a sun exist it would be reasonable for him/her to believe even though the sun can not be seen because there are evidences of the sun existence (such as heat) that would give credence to that belief. The same thing is true of God (the "unknown" that most people are talking about in this context). Although He is beyond the comprehension and ability of any human to understand Him, there are evidences of His existence that would lead some to believe He exist. The holy writings of virtually any religion suggest that the whole universe (from the smallest atom to the largest sun) testifies to God existence, but the most obvious evidence is the Messengers of God. All the Messengers (Moses, Christ, etc.) arise singly and alone to spread a message, they all say that the message is not from them, they all link themselves to past Messengers and mention future ones to come, and they leave a book that provides for the creation of an entire civilization. There are no "normal" people that can do that - it is evidence of a Divine power that can, has, and will forever transform the world.

The way I look at it, for some, having faith in something/someone --even if someone or something is unknown...brings many through a variety of atrocities that would otherwise seem hopeless.

Its called faith, I'm always amazed in people who claim they don't believe in God or the unknown until they become sick then who do they look too, you can deny it but its the truth

Better to believe in things that are not there, than to NOT believe in things that ARE there. In other words, the person who always believes there is a tiger hiding in the grass is more likely to survive than the one who doesn't believe you when you tell him there is a tiger hiding in the grass.
It's an evolved trait.

We may be stupid morons, but I had rather die believing and it not come to pass than to die not a believer and the Bible be true. I, for one, am happy to think of a better place.
