whether nerve is exposed can be told by a dentist exam, but if you have one (sensitive to cold and hot) then root canal is the only way for appropriate treatment, good luck

you may not necessarily need a root canal, it depends on what kind of decay your tooth has. You probably need at least a filling though, and possibly gum surgury. Your gums have to be really bad though in order to do the surgury. There may be some alternative treatments they can try first. But most inportantly you need to make an appointment with a dentist. Do let this go on too long... you might save yourself from a root canal if you go sooner than later!

If a root canal is your decision, see an endodontist instead of a dentist. They are specialists in this field. Many dentists have broken files in patients teeth and in many cases the tooth has to be removed or the file left in place. Generally it will take about five years before the effects of leaving the file begin to show. There is no legal recourse against a dentist if this happens. At least with the specialist you will have the very best chance of success in saving the tooth.

You need to go to a dentist and get your tooth pulled or have a root canal done. Exposed nerves can be very painful. I've had a couple myself. I got my tooth pulled that was bothering me. I've heard that root canals aren't exactly a walk in the park!

When you say, "It LOOKS like I have an exposed nerve," do you mean you can actually see tissue hanging out of your tooth? I doubt it. You would be in too much pain to even type!
Go to your dentist and find out what's really going on. You may just need to switch your toothpaste. There are ten other answers about sensitive teeth, but it depends on what's wrong. Go to your dentist.

Receding gums really don't have anything to do with needing a root canal. See a dentist and find out what you need to have done.

Go to your dentist. 27 is young to have receding gums. You probably have some other problem, or poor hygiene habits (maybe not just not brushing and flossing, but doing them too vigorously).

Fill in that area or get a root canal or remove the root. I had the same thing happen and they filled it in for me.

you need to get it checked at the Dentist. you are very young to have receding gums. quit smoking if you do and add more vitamin C to your diet and floss every day. get dental cleanings every 6months to avoid those painful gum surgeries.
