is it the heat getting out, or the cold getting in??
there is constant heat loss and the heated air will escape through any none insulated surface just by simple dissapation.. the heated air that escapes has to be replaced with air from someplace.. it is replaced by the cold air from outside through the same uninsulated openings under the layer of air in the house that is heated since warm air rises..

Everything is made up of molecules. When agitated the result is felt as heat. The agitated molecules in your home rub against the molicules in the walls which in turn rub against the molicules out side. The ones in side cool because of the friction and the slow ones out side get warmer as they speed up.

Heat rises, so I would think it could escape out of window sills, chimneys, vents, or anywhere there is not a good seal...
