when i was in high school, i pierced my lip when i was in class, i just used a big safety pin. seriously though, there are alot of veins in you lip area, especially if you are talking about your upper lip. If done wrong you could hit a vein and end up having to get help for it. I'm not gonna tell you not to do it, cause I've done it before, with no ice!
I will say though that piercing anything with a needle actually tears the skin no matter how sharp it is...they are just not as sharp as a hollow needle use by a professional. Expect a much longer healing time, and higher risk for infection.
First wash your hands with anti-bacterial soap for a good 30 seconds. think of using disposable gloves too. Clean the area you are talking about with anti-bacterial soap as well.....then if you want, numb it with ice, soak the BRAND NEW needle in rubbing alcohol while numbing the area. Then get ready for some pain, cause it actually hurts more than done by a professional, and it takes longer to get the needle through the skin than if it was professionally done.
Once you have the needle through the skin, you have to take it out and then put a ring or stud through it......i would suggest putting a ring through because you lip IS going to swell pretty good, and will be that way for about a week or so. Having a ring in also helps while cleaning because its just easier. Clean the piercing three times a day with anti-bacterial soap...good luck!

I just got my labret and medusa done, so I know the draw of the lip piercing! I'm not advocating self-piercing, but I am glad that you're asking questions before you just do it. :)
Make sure that you do it with a high powered light as there is the high possibility of excessie bleeding. Buy a presterilized hollow needle from a reputable vendor (I cannot emphasize this enough - you need a hollow needle or the lip piercing will not react well - you need to carve room for the ring to heal in.)
Also, don't go smaller than a 16 gauge piercing because you do not want to risk the cheese-cutter effect when you're pierced (your lip ring gets snagged on something and suddenly you've ripped it through your lip.)
I hope this stuff helps - it's just some recommendations from an extremely pierced individual.

Meh, don't bother with the numbing - doesn't work well.
There's not much to it, really. Just figure out where you want the piercing, and do it. And hope that you don't hit a blood vessel or something, or get a nice infection(I got a real pretty one when I did some piercings on my ears a couple years ago). Make sure to use a needle that is thick enough to make a hole for the ring to fit in, and try to get it in straight. Maybe use something to clamp it?

Ok, first Im gonna say what you said not to...go to a professional, just because one it is safer, and two when you want to buy jewelry its gonna be easier to find. It would be hard to put a large enough hole in it to get lip rings into. With that said, if you are dead set on doing it. I would numb it with ice and oragel, heat the tip of whatever you piercing with (for sanitation, obviously let it cool before you use it) and I would assume to start the hole on the inside of your lip and come out so that you donot pierce into your gums. Good luck on whatever you decide. Oh yeah, once it is done, wash it with antibacterial soap and either buy the H20 spray from spencers to spray it several times a day, or rinse it several times a day with salt water. This helps in the healing process. Do not use neosporin, alcohol, etc. These will cause scarring and a knot to come up. Once again...good luck.

Screw all them people that tell you not to do it yourslef. Ive done it probly 15 times now, but my parents always make me take it out.
But, After you pierce it make sure to leave the ring in and not take it out for about 4 weeks, one time mine got infected from tkaing it out to much before it was healed. The infection does hurt but it doesnt look to attractive.. hopefully this helped

Since you're considering going with stupidity anyway, what the heck, try a rusty nail or an ice pick? What about a hole puncher? That'll make a hole I bet!
