I usually give patients three choices.
1. Take out the nerve.
2. Take out the tooth.
3. Do nothing.
"You tried number three already and that didn't work, so you came to me. If we take out the tooth, we have a whole new set of problems to deal with. I suggest we just take out the nerve and save the tooth."
If you think you need a root canal, find out for sure and then just do it. Root canals are like teenagers; ninie out of ten are no problem. You only hear about the bad ones.

Extraction is the only other cure when a root canal is indicated. However, you do NOT need to have it capped right away. That's where the real expense comes in.
I had a front tooth that needed a root canal in 1971. The tooth broke off and had to be capped in 2000. I had another root canal done on another front tooth in 2000 and I expect to cap it about 2010. You can take a while to get it capped.

From a dentist's perspective, if you want to save your tooth you should have the root canal done. Most root canals are successful and need to be restored within 3 months with a permanent restoration such as a permanent filling or a crown. If it is a back tooth you chew on you should have a crown placed as the tooth will be too weak to function without fracturing. I have seen many patients lose their teeth because they did not want to get a root canal or waited too long to get a permanent restoration.

Well, you get the root canal, but they're not cheap (I work in a dental office lol) Other than that, I believe that your only other choice would be to get the tooth pulled. If you want to save the tooth, get the root canal.
Check with your dentist.

Go to the dentist, if he says you need it, get it done. That is not something you want to put off. Get it over with now before it is worse (more inflamed, etc.). They can sedate you pretty well if you are scared. I had 6 teeth cut out (4 wisdom, which were growing completely sideways, and crushed 2 of my other teeth) and I don't remember a thing. I was completely out. And I am glad, because I hate the dentist.

Only your dentist can determine if you need a root canal. Trust him. If you need it, you need it. Otherwise you could risk loosing the tooth or get an infection.

I have had a rood canal it is no big deal. Have it done if you need too it is better then getting it pulled and having your teeth move. Plus they put on a cap and no one knows you had one done.

the only way to avoid it is to have the tooth pulled. If you do nothing your tooth will eventually die, and will turn black.
