It's called elephantiasis and the formal name is filiariasis. It's a disease casued by filarial worms most common in tropical and subtropic regions of the world. The larvae enter the body via the bite of a mosquito, blackfly or midge. The larvae grow into adult worms and tend to infest the lymph nodes, lymphatic system, sybcutaneous tissue and skin and cause infection. The worms and the infection in the lymphatic system blocks the passage of lymph fluid and results in swelling and pain in the limb below the blockage, usually a leg. After many years, if left untreated, the limb can become greatly swollen and heavy and the skin becomes coarse and tough.

Hi, Probably comes from the concept that the person has no brains and nothing but air between their ears. Probably a similar concept of what we used to call a dumb blond or a ditzy beautiful model - beautiful but with no brains - have we not all seen them on the cat walks ? Prancing down the path swinging one leg across the other looking vacant and stupid with their pout lips and skinny emaciated bodies? I knew a fashion photographer once and he said the perception of a dumb model was spot on - they learned to rely on their looks and never used their brains - however I am sure like all generalisations that there were exceptions to the rule. Sorry if I deviated regards MGD PS - I noticed we are now into trading insults - I like the one "If you had half a brain it would be lonely" 280212

According to Wikipedia: "a syndrome that is characterized by the thickening of the skin and underlying tissues, especially in the legs and genitals. Elephantiasis generally results from obstructions of the lymphatic vessels. It is most commonly caused by a parasitic disease known as lymphatic filariasis."
An interesting tidbit: I once saw a PBS documentary on Joseph Merick, the supposed "Elephant Man." And the scientists/doctors interviewed claimed that he may have not had elephantiasis at all. That his structure was so different from typical cases, he may have had a disease uniquely his own. In fact, one dr interviewed said he had "Merick's Disease."
