"Paydirt" is finding something that has exchange value inside the earth. People hit "paydirt" when they find things such as oil, gold, iron, and other stuff that people deem valuable, after having dug in the dirt in order to find it.

Refers to the geological zone which contains the prize of which you are hunting...by hitting this zone you've struck it rich. A term often used in football about a good player having an awesome season.
