The National Trust is a charity and relies on membership fees and fund raising for its money. English Heritage is part funded by the government. They have similar roles in preserving and maintaining important cultural and historic property and land.

English Heritage owns buildings which date from much further back into antiquity, such as castles, and prehistoric sites. National Trust owns stately homes from about the 16th century to the modern day, although most of these date from 18th/19th centuries. The properties owned by National Trust have been restored to give an accurate impression to the visitor of what it would have been like at the time, whereas English Heritage often owns ruins and archaeological sites which have just been preserved as they are to prevent them from falling into further disrepair.
