It's kind of late, but it might still work -------- why not try to reach 50 of her friends, relatives, neighbors, important people, and ask them to write a note, a card - a few sentences, of how they appreciate the role she's played in their lives. Combine them all in a very fancy box, include a new address book, some stationery, a nice pen and wrap it up with a really fancy bow (fabric ribbon, like from a florist). It would be a very lovely present, because it shows that although she might be feeling old (believe me, i'm near her age, and I'm feeling it) - look at all the people who find her important to them! Include nieces, nephews, even the mail man -- people your mum encounters in everyday life. the preacher, the grocer, etc. and of course, those who are more close, near & dear. You're validating her purpose and giving her a gift that keeps her connected as she enters the next stage of her life.
If you can, put together a scrap book -- perhaps these people might have a photo that is special to them - of your mum and them, that you could quickly color xerox. If money is a concern, then xerox them in black and white on paper in your mum's favorite color. Stick them in 3 ring binder, or a photo album.
Your mum is lucky to have you as her kid - and i hope she has a grand b-day! good luck!

Throw a cowbot themed party, my g/f's mum had her 50th last year and thats what we did. just get some cowboy songs and a few bails of hay and get every1 to come in stetsons or dungerees and that's the makin for a brilliant themed party. You're bound to play steps '5,6,7,8' at least once in the night and all the salloon dressed girls will be up doing their line-dance! fun for all ages. plus, get a game of horse-shoe tossing going, that was a big attraction at the one I hosted!

I guess that depends on how much you are able to spend.
You could get her an open ticket for a 'Facial' treatment at a local beauty salon - they have an array of prices depending on the treatment. This is pure indulgence and I would opt for this myself (and I am just a little older than your mother).
Most women like jewellery so that would be a good option.
A newspaper, video or DVD about the year she was born would be good.

Throw her a suprise bday party and invite as much people as you can find that know/knew her. Even childhood friends. Then have everyone bring pictures of her and/or them together. The pictures will be a big hit because chances are she has never seen those pictures before, since they were from someone elses camera. Maybe do it a couple days before so she wont suspect anything. Have Fun!

For my mums 50th i bought her a photo session sitting for all the family, so she had a memory of the day, followed by nice meal in a posh restaurant. She thoroughly enjoyed it!
