You are quite right. Rear facing cameras don't catch the riders face, whilst Front facing cameras don't get the reg number.
A friend of mine had 'Sorry Officer you must be mistaken' along the bottom of his bikes plates.

The camera (radar unit) works on what is called the doppler affect - it can ascertain by the amount of echo coming back to the the radar unit alongside the camera as to how fast any vehicle is going. There is a policeman sat in the back of the van recording number plates on a video monitor as the vehicle passes the van.

This is another way that motor cyclists flout the law. Anyone who drives around and doesn't see them constantly breaking the rules of the road must be blind.Forward facing speed cameras also are unable to read their number plates,so whilst we car drivers get fined for doing a few miles over the limit, they get away with driving way over the limit.

As you approach, the beam hits you and records your speed, the number plate has nothing to do with it. You will be stopped by a copper hiding in the bushes further along the road.

assuming you mean where they merely write a ticket and mail it to the owner, they would most likely have video or cameras from the rear of the van also.
