I always like to write "I am so sorry for your loss." Including the word SO in this statement indicates that you are being sincere, and not just writing down what is proper or expected.

If you want to write more, be sure to include something about all of the fond memories giving him the strength to face this tragedy, and to remember that she is no longer in any kind of pain.

Say: Dear _____,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother. Losing a loved one is never an easy thing, and if there is anything I can do for you let me know-- I am here for you. I hope to see you back at work as soon as you are feeling up to it.

Sincerely,
___________

probably the best thing to write is:

My condolences to you and your family on your loss. You will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in your time of mourning.

Then just sign the card-simple and to the point is best!

If you are not close, simply sign the card. If you are close, then write a personal message from your heart.

Just that you are sorry to hear about his loss. Even if you don't know what to say, just tell your friend that you are thinking of him and his family.

A one liner is best. Something like "I'm sorry for your loss", or "My prayers are with you", or "you are in my heart and prayers".

Just say that you are thinking of them and for him to let you know if he needs to talk. Its the thought that counts, not so much what you say.

I can't imagine the depth of your loss.
I am terribly sorry.
If you need anything, just ask.
I'll be thinking of you, (praying for you if you do that).
And sign it Respectfully Yours.
