A nut is a seed, but not all seeds are nuts. A seed comes from fruit and can be removed from the fruit. A nut is a compound ovary that is both the seed and the fruit, which cannot be separated.

Look at it this way. A plum and an almond are from the same family of trees. A plum contains a seed in the center. An almond is the complete fruit so it is a nut.

Based on this a sunflower seed is a nut since it is not the center of a fruit.
