My mum has told me that his name in Ian Dickson, but I'm not sure if that is true or not.
His name is not on my birht certificate, and I don't know anything else about him.
I am unwilling to talk to my mum about it, as we don't get on very well, and don't see each other much anyway.

Any suggestions?

You might try the family tracing service at the Salvation Army.

I would say forget it unless your mom knows that he would like to see you. If he hasn't been willing to be around or help out maybe he's not interested. If it was your moms choice, he doesn't know you excised or he thought he was just doing what was best for you (like if Mom remarried) then maybe look into it. If you have a step dad that has been Dad and there for you all your life I definitely would say forget it hes all you need. Then you would have your dad, who needs to know the sperm donor, right. Otherwise, yes, it is POSSIBLE to trace him. You can use the white pages on-line or they have other things you can use but they cost money. It helps if you know where abouts he lives.

That is definitely a start.

Follow that lead until you can't follow it any more. Hopefully along the way you are able to pick up more information.

If you have a possible first/last name you're in decent shape. If you just have a first name....you're out of luck.

Yes it is possible, I traced both my Mum and Dad and one of them doesn't even live in this country. Try salvation army as someone else has said, also try the electoral roll and the birth and death records at your local library

You could look him up online. They have websites where you could get information on people, but sometimes you got to pay. Try this site if not google it and other things should show up. Good luck

If you've any idea of his age and or birth date and where he was brought up you could try friends reunited. Theres ancestry.com but again you'd need more of an idea of his birth date.
I'm sure you already have but theres always your birth cert

no it would be really hard. Stick with the family that took care of you, believe me you may not want to know him.
