Sure, just hanging out and watching a movie is just as much as going out and having dinner or some, why?, because you will be with the same person, the only difference is that it is a different time frame and place. A date in time past would considered a formal precedure like, the guy asking a lady to go out on a dinner and of course he takes the initiative to pay and so on, but in this present time people especially in this 21st Century, there is no formal or informal ways of a date, though in some countries and in the US too still in some areas practices this, but in your case, even just having a cup of coffee or tea and talking to each other, is having a date, because you are in that set time and place with whom you wanted to have a date with. It works both ways, now women is asking guys to go on a date, not many, but a fraction does, so as time changes, the ways of things changes too, so go ahead, have that cool time together and sit back and enjoy a movie, it cost you less than when you have to prepare to go out and spend more on dinner or anywhere else that will rob you of enjoying togetherness, unless you can afford it.

hanging out or watching a movie with a guy friend is not a date. That is just hanging out. If it is a date the guy (or girl) ask do you want to go out with me or on a date with me.

To me it's a date if the person you're with is special to you and you're special to them and you have a great time. More or less any time spent with them (out) after that time falls straight into the 'date' category ;-).

A date is whatever you make of it. I've gone out on dates and I've gone out on prearranged nondates that were better than most dates I've ever been out on.
