I adopted my GSD and he appears to be mostly pure bred but he resembles a Lab in some ways. Is there any trait that a GSD has that other dogs do not?

usually, if a dog looks like any two dogs that are not similar in appearence, then more than likely they are a mix breed. However, you could check two things out. I've owned various breeds and trained various breeds and of all, there are only two breeds that I have ever seen cross their front legs from time to time. These are the German Shepherd Dog and the Belgium Malinois. I know that a lot of people will argue this as a trait but no other breeds that i have seen do this. They don't cross their front legs all the time just every now and then. Also, the best way to be sure if he is pure bred or not, get a DNA test done by either a veterinarian or request one mailed to you and mail off the samples; you should get results in less than a week. Oh, and the spots on teh tounges or mouth thing mentioned above is no way to see if a dog is pure or not. I know from experience that some ways of identifying a dog is through microchips, tattooed numbers and tattooed tounges. Some breeders or owners do this to identify their dogs from a young age, usually under 3 months. Also, i've owned GSD's from european working lines with Seiger titles and their tounges have been marked with spots. The spots mean nothing in determining a dogs pedigree.

Does he have the beauty mark (moles) on either side of his face ? does he have the true markings of a GSD ? if he resembles a lab in some ways, then he is probably a cross breed, his snout and muzzle should NOT be too well rounded but just a little more pointed as his nose tapers. I've had purebred GSD's all my life and would never have anything but a GS, they are the most true and beautiful dog I've ever seen of any of the breeds. Good luck with your boy, but next time if you want a true GS, please check out a few breeders first before you settle on one.

depends on what type of shepherd you have.there are many different kinds.there are Ghost Shepherds, long haired and short haired.the most common is "the police dog".find a pic of a cop dog and you got what a standered shepherd looks like.also keep in mind that there is no such thing as a pure breed.shepherds have 6 different breeds and rotti's have 5.that is how they get certion marks.also look at the roof of his mouth if there are dark spots chances are he's mixed.

Traits are no way to determine the breed of a dog. Dog can have personalities as do human. Do you all Golden Retriever are friendly and loving? Generally they are, but it is not set in concrete.
