Dates on multi-vitamins and medications are a general guideline. They are abused by revenue hungry companies that want you to throw their stuff out and buy, buy more of their products.

That are good to know about how long you have the product, you don't want to take it if it's 5 years over expiration. You'd be amazed how time flys, the stuff could be 15 years old too.

However, if it is 1-3 years past expiration date I take the meds and they are fine. The cold medications work, etc.

The only potential is that they might not be as potent, as in 100% potency 1 year after expiration, but the process is VERY slow.... like 90% potency after 2 more years, etc.

They write the dates also to avoid any penalty by law in case it is not 100%, since 95% may cause a law suit these days.

Well any medication past its expiration date should be thrown away. And yes multivitamins are considered OTC drugs. THey can interfere with any current medications whether OTC or prescription. Also multi-vitamins are hardly ever needed. Many vitamins arer needed in such minute amounts that a multi-vitamin and posion the body instead of helping it. Such as the fact that your body stores enough vitamin A for a year. Just because. The only exception is if your doctor, dietition, or nurse practitioner prescribe a vitamin for you. Do not take expired vitamins or meds and do not take them without the advice of a doctor.

Well, they probably still have some value....though not much.

It is not recommended to take any medication that is out of date.

If it were me, I would flush them down toilet and buy a fresh supply.

I don't think it would hurt to take them but since they are old they probably don't have the same potency as they did when they were fresh..............just go out and buy ya a fresh and new supply!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
