Throw the pullups away! Those things are horrible. They are nothing like real underwear so the poor child doesn't get the same sensation when he/she wets. Actually it sounds as if the child wasn't fully potty trained, and probably not really ready to be potty trained to begin with. That is WHY the "regress". It's actually not a regression as much as it is simply being a child who isn't ready for the toilet but a lot of parents seem to be in a hurry to make their kids grow up so they force potty training. At three years old your son's bladder isn't as big as your's, and his can't hold as much water as your's can...Would you be able to hold your water for 72 hours? That's about what it feels like to your son. He's not an adult, he is a small child.

I definately would not put him back in pull ups either. Maybe if you are outside you can tell him (beforehand) that if he needs to pee he can do it in the woods. He may think it is neat and thus be less likely to wet.
On a car trip, first, I would line his seat with a wetness barrier. Mabye bring some things like "surprises" (cheap dollar store toys, candy, fruit snacks) and tell him if he makes it 1.5 hrs or tells you he has to go, then he gets to pick something. Of course, if he tells you and you stop -- he HAS to then go, or no treat. YOu may also want to really limit his beverages on a long car trip. I do that to myself!
Keep it fun, upbeat, don't make him think he is bad or a failure. I know this is frustrating, just know this too will pass!

these people telling you to kick the child when he wets himself or whack him on the nose and rub his face in it obviously are not parents of a three year old
if i were you i would have him go before you left the house, and schedule stops along the road at a rest stop to go
as far as the woods let him go again every hour maybe against a tree

he may think that since there aren't any toliets where he is at that wetting himself is the natural alternative. Make sure you tell him prior to the walk that if he has to go then mommy will help him find a "potty" to go in. Same thing with a car ride

I know a few toddlers who make the connection between needing to pee and having to go inside. They just don't want to go in the house. According to my Grandma this was a huge issue with my dad when he was a kid. He'd cry whenever she'd take his shoes off too.

you need to talk t ohim and when you are out ask him if he needs to go or stop especially in the car and take him to the bathroom. if its a long car trip use a pull up. he wont regress my son is also three and newly trained, this is what has worked for us. when in the woods teach him to pee on a tree,
