I am a massage therapist,here are a few things:
Check your posture, ideally you want to be like a tree trunk. Working w/ gravity not against it.
Next your sleeping habits, chiropractors will tell you to sleep on your back with a pillow under your knees to take the pressure off your lower back. ( who can sleep like that really but try)
And if it is worse when you walk try not to til it gets better, pain is a signal that you are doing something wrong. Next, the way you sit. don't stick your neck forward, and don't sit so all your trunk weight is resting on your lower back. Our bodies are so amazing, listen to it. And last but not least, try and save up for a massage, it is a holistic way to feel better, and he/she will most likely have some good (but different) advice for you.

I too have had back problems in that area.As boring as it sounds, swimming really works.Say 10-15 lenghts 3 times a week followed by stretching exercices, holding the stretch for 2 mins or so.
I dont mean to sound mean but if you are heavyset ,lose some weight. The easiest way is to change your diet.I did that and lost lots of pounds by drinking juice instead of pop, eating popcorn instead of chips etc
