I recommend checking with your school because most college financial aid office and your high school guidance office (if a high school senior) should provide a listing. There are many free membership scholarship search websites out there. In addition, I recommend doing a search for your college major and the word scholarship at Yahoo.com and Google.com because some career fields offer scholarships.

http://education.yahoo.com/college/financial_aid/articles/scholarships_index.html provides the basics about applying for scholarships.

you could use fastweb, but my experience with them is that most are essay or involve that you are a super student that also has time to volunteer.
most of the essay ones involved a lot of work and don't pay out that much money.
the best place to apply for scholarships is with the schools where you think you might attend. also see if their is a place in your city that has scholarships. i know they do in Cincinnati.
